BTM produces information in accessible formats for
people who are unable to read written documents. As an organisation
we are committed to making all forms of printed material available
to people who are unable to understand or access standard written information.
There are a wide variety of reasons why a significant number of people
are unable to access information including
• a visual impairment
• poor literacy skills
• having English as a second language
• disabilities that make it difficult to use the written word
Over 25 years we have built up a wide range of skills and knowledge in
multi-lingual audio visual work and translations. Audio information is
a tried and tested method for communicating with people who have a restricted
ability to see and read effectively. British Sign Language is first language
of many deaf people and we have an innovative project delivering accessible
with the local deaf community. Our AIM Project works with people with learning
disabilities and users of mental health services to produce Easyread and
audio information.
Progressive businesses are now recognising the power
of accessible information in in the wider marketplace. It
is known that in the UK there are at least one and a half million people
who are blind or partially sighted. This figure does not take into
account dyslexia sufferers, or people who for various physical reasons,
such as paralysis and arthritis, are unable to hold up reading material,
while many more people may be classified as print-disabled due to poor
literacy skills.
Add to this the wide range of people whose first language is not
English and it is clear there is a huge potential for reaching people
through multi-lingual accessible information.
